AD 14. Æ Sestertius (36mm, 25.23g). Restitution
issue. Rome mint. Struck under Nerva, AD 98. Obv.
Laureate head of Divus Augustus right. Rev. Legend
around large SC. RIC II 136 (Nerva). Nice VF+.
Traces of smoothing around legend. Dark reddish
brown patina. Rare type, unusually complete on
impressive large flan 36mm. The restoration types
serve the general purpose of linking the reign of
Nerva to that of Augustus. Succeeding to the
throne by violence, Nerva felt the need to attach
himself to the great imperial tradition and
naturally went back from the Flavians to Augustus
himself. The formula restituit is here used
loosely: not a single type is restored exactly as
originally struck. For some like the sestertii
with the portrait of Divus Augustus, we cannot
point to any coin that can be regarded as a model.
What is restored is essentially the memory, rather
than the coins, of the founder of the Empire." (H.
Mattingly).

HISTORIQUE AUGUSTE (96-98). Monnayage de
Restitution de Nerva. Nerva, fondateur d'une
nouvelle dynastie, restitua la mémoire d'Auguste à
travers un important monnayage de bronze
(sesterces, dupondii et asses) et un rarissime
monnayage d'argent (denier).

(3) IMP NERVA CAESAR
AVGVSTVS REST. (IMPerator
NERVA CAESAR AVGVSTVS RESTituit). Nerva, capostipite
denario.
sui nominali in bronzo romani (sesterzi, dupondi e
competenze dirette dell'imperatore). |
