I conclude by noting within the limits of a remote
assessment, that the figure coin has physical, general
and style characteristics comparable with those of
period coins of the same type. In the present state of
conservation, if authentic, the coin could, in my
opinion, have a market value of c. 20€.
Best regards.

Notes:
(1) The coin
under consideration is a "Post-Reform Radiate
Fraction" (weighing about 3.0g). Reverse axis of
the coin could be at 0 o'clock or at 6 o'clock. I
collect in the table the physical characteristics
of the coins of the type of figure present in
the above links:

(2.90g) falls within the margins of variability of
the tabulated coins.
2) IMP C M A
MAXIMIANVS P F AVG (IMPerator Caesar
Marcus Aurelius MAXIMIANVS Pius Felix AVGustus). For
a short biographical note on Maximianus Herculius click here. For the
historical framework of the first tetrarchy, click here. The
same type of coin was minted, as a sign of agreement
among the parties, in the name of:
- IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG (
Ric 46a)
- IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG (
Ric 47)
- FL VAL CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES (
Ric 48a)
- IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG (
Ric 46b)
- GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES (

(3) CONCORDIA MIL-ITVM. The
Soldiers' Concord. The consent of the troops was
invoked and bought by all the military monarchies of
the period to ensure survival and to guarantee
security against invasion.
(4) Δ/ALE,
the mint sign, is made up of two parts: the first, "Δ", is the
Greek numeral that distinguishes the fourth of 4
oficinae active at the time in the mint"; the
second, "ALE", is the
abbreviated name of Alexandria mint in Egypt. |
