155-120 B.C.E. Description Due to the ass's head
on the obverse, Crawford identifies the monyer's
cognomen as "Silanus." Crawford, also, mentions
multiple individuals by the name of "M. Iunius
Silanus" and laments that "... the history of the
early Iunii Silani is unfortunately obscure and
likely to remain so." Sydenham lists the moneyer
as "M. Junius (Silanus)." Subjects Roma; ass;
Dioscuri; horse. Type-ObverseHelmeted head of Roma
to right; behind, ass's head; before, value mark
(X); border of dots. Type-Reverse Dioscuri
galloping to right; below, M·IVNI; in exergue,
ROMA; line border. Legend-Reverse M·IVNI ROMA.
Concludo osservando che le caratteristiche fisiche,
generali e di stile della moneta non si discostano da
quelle delle monete d'epoca di pari tipologia reperite
nel web. Nel presente stato di conservazione la
moneta, se autentica, vale, a mio avviso, una
sessantina di euro.

in esame un peso di 2,86÷4,04 g e un diametro di

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche
fisiche della moneta in esame (3,6g, 17-18mm, ?)
rientrano nei margini di variazione delle monete
dello stesso tipo reperite nel web.
(2) Dalla testa d'asino sul
dritto, Crawford ritiene di poter identificare il
cognomen del monetiere come "Silanus". Crawford,
inoltre, menziona piů individui con il nome di "M.
Iunius Silanus" e sostiene che "... la storia dei
primi Iunii Silani sia purtroppo oscura e
probabilmente tale rimarrŕ". Sydenham elenca il
denaro come "M. Junius (Silanus).
(3) X, segno del valore, indica
che un denario d'argento era scambiabile con 10 assi
di bronzo (1 denario = X assi).
