Commentary Poids léger. Historical background
NÉRON (10/13/54 to 06/09/68) Nero Claudius Cæsar
Drusus Germanicus August (13/10/54-9/06/68). Nero
is certainly one of the most famous emperors
through Tacitus and Suetonius, but also one of the
most maligned. This is the last of the
Julio-Claudian dynasty. Son of Agrippina, the
second wife of Claudius, and Gnaeus Domitius
Ahenobarbus, who was born in 37. It comes down to
time of Augustus by his mother and Julie by his
maternal grandfather, Germanicus. After the murder
of Agrippina with Claude by using Locust in 54, 17
years old, he began his reign auspiciously. Helped
Seneca, his tutor, and Burrus, prefect of the
Praetorium, he governs wisely with the Senate. He
married Octavia, daughter of Claudius and
Messalina. Brother of Octavia, Britannicus, died
in mysterious circumstances in 55 AD (poisoned?).
After the "quinquennum aureum" (54-59), the
emperor is allowed to murder or his mother. The
last nine years of his reign will destabilize the
principality.

References: BMC I 381; RIC I 543; WCN 593; Lyon
228; Cohen I 302; SRCV I 690. $450.00. Possibly
the most infamous of the Roman Emperors, Nero
ruled Rome from 54 AD until his death by his own
hand in 68 AD. From murdering his mother and other
political opponents to (according to rumour)
starting the great fires of Rome, the stories
about his reign paint a picture of a tyrannical
and impulsive Emperor that the people of Rome were
glad to see gone. Victoria (Victory) on the
reverse of this coin is the personification of the
goddess of victory. She is the equivalent of Nike,
the Greek goddess who is often seen in the hand of
Athena on ancient Greek coins.

Note:
(1) Asse
(rame).

(2) IMPerator NERO CAESAR
AVGustus Pontifex MAXimus TRibunicia Potestate
Pater Patriae (Imperatore Nero Cesare Augusto,
Pontefice Massimo investito dei poteri di
tribuno, Padre della Patria). La moneta viene
datata dal ric attorno al 66 d.C. (v. Ric pag.
160).
(3) Secondo BMC, il tema
della Vittoria è probabilmente legato alle
campagne condotte con successo da Nerone
contro i Parti (58-63 d.C.).
