Denario, Galba e la corona civica

Buonasera Sig.Giulio,
ci eravamo sentiti tempo fa per chiederle un parere sull’autenticità di una moneta. Ora volevo chiederle gentilmente se tramite un esame visivo, lei saprebbe darmi il valore della moneta della quale le ho allegato la foto, si tratta dell’imperatore Galba, quindi di un imperatore che effettivamente ha regnato proprio poco, ma volevo capire in base alla conservazione, che valore gli attribuirebbe.

Before becoming emperor, the elderly Galba, governor of Hispania Terraconensis, served many years as a capable administrator and military leader, having previously governed in Gaul, Germany, Africa and Spain, where he had earned a reputation for strictness and impartiality. Hearing that he was in disfavor with Nero and that he would soon be executed, he considered joining the revolt of the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, Gaius Julius Vindex, who had promised him his support in a bid for the throne. He hesitated, however, which was probably fateful as Vindex’s revolt was quickly suppressed, the usurper committing suicide. The turmoil in Rome continued, and in June AD 68 the Praetorian Prefect, Nymphidius Sabinus, transferred his allegiance to Galba. Nero, deserted by the Praetorians, was declared a public enemy by the Senate and committed suicide. Galba promptly took the title of Caesar, raised a legion, and along with the governor of Lusitania, Marcus Salvius Otho, quickly marched on Rome where he was welcomed into the city. Galba’s short reign was unpopular. Fearing conspiracy, he executed many senators and equites without trial, and he never paid the Praetorians the bonus promised in his name by prefect Nymphidius, scorning the idea that a soldier’s loyalty could be bought. Additionally, the Rhine legions were hostile to him - they had expected to be rewarded for their loyalty to the throne by their actions in suppressing the revolt of Vindex, but instead were accused of impeding Galba’s path to the throne. On January 1 AD 69, they refused to swear allegiance to the emperor and instead proclaimed their commander, Aulus Vitellius, emperor. With the Rhine legions in revolt, Galba made the fatal mistake of formerly adopting Lucius Calpurnius Piso Licinianus as his successor, which had the effect of inciting the hatred of his former supporter, Otho, who had hoped for the honor for himself. Otho plotted his revenge, and five days after Piso’s adoption, Praetorian guardsmen in his pay brutally murdered both Galba and Piso. 9,000$.

Concludo osservando che dal confronto tra la moneta in esame e le monete autentiche del periodo non emergono differenze sostanziali per quanto concerne le caratteristiche fisiche, l'aspetto generale e lo stile. Alla luce di quanto sopra, nei limiti di una valutazione a distanza, ritengo che il prezzo pagato per l'acquisto del campione in esame (125€) sia congruo e comparabile con quello di monete con lo stesso grado di conservazione.

Dalla tabella si evince che il denario di figura presenta caratteristiche fisiche (2,94g, 17-18mm) che rientrano nei margini di variabilità delle monete autentiche reperite nel web.
(2) IMP SER GALBA AVG (IMPerator SERVius GALBA AVGustus). Traggo dallo Stevenson elementi per la scheda biografica che segue:
Galba nacque il 3 a. C., rampollo della nobile famiglia dei Sulpici, il cui fondatore vantava una discendenza da Giove. La mamma, Mummia Achaica, era a sua volta pronipote di quel L. Mummio che si gloriava di aver distrutto Corinto. Pretore sotto Tiberio a 20 anni, console a 33, poi legato della Germania Superiore all'inizio del regno di Caligola, diventò proconsole d'Africa all'età di 42 anni dopo aver riportato una grande vittoria sui Catti l'anno precedente e recuperato le insegne di Varo. Grande aristocratico, molto ricco, la sua omosessualità ci è nota da Svetonio. Svolse l'incarico di governatore della Spagna Tarragonese sotto Nerone. Quando Vindice, governatore della Gallia, lo sollecitò a prendere il posto di Nerone alla guida dell'impero, Galba, dapprima rifiutò, poi accettò avendo appreso che Nerone voleva la sua morte. Acclamato imperatore dalle truppe, si dichiarò pronto ad obbedire ai voleri del Senato e del popolo romano. Quando gli giunse notizia del suicidio di Vindice a causa della sconfitta che questi aveva subito ad opera di Virginio Rufo, legato in Germania, Galba temette per la propria vita. Confortato tuttavia dalle notizie che gli giungevano da Roma circa la morte di Nerone (9 giugno del 68) e dall'unanime dichiarazione in suo favore del Senato, accettò il titolo di Cesare e mosse lentamente verso l'Urbe. L'elevazione ad Augusto avvenne l'11 giugno del 68. Era opinione comune che Galba sarebbe stato all'altezza del compito affidatogli dal Senato, data la profonda conoscenza della macchina amministrativa che gli veniva attribuita visti gli importanti incarichi di governo che aveva svolto nel corso della sua carriera. Tuttavia, un po' per il carattere duro, un po' forse per l'età (aveva 72 anni, molto per quei tempi), un po' per una scelta infelice dei più diretti collaboratori a cui aveva delegato le funzioni amministrative, un po' per il rifiuto di donativi opposto alla guardia pretoriana che ne aveva fatto richiesto, si ritrovò presto isolato. Una rivolta nella Germania Superiore lo indusse a ricercare una soluzione politica. Egli ritenne che alla base della perdita di consenso vi fosse l'assenza di un erede e l'età. Decise allora (10 gennaio 69) di adottare Pisone Frugi Liciniano, giovane di bell'aspetto e di nobile lignaggio. Malauguratamente, in occasione dell'adozione, rifiutò ancora una volta alla guardia pretoriana l'atteso donativo. Approfittò dello scontento Otone, sino ad allora suo stretto collaboratore; costui, sentitosi messo in disparte per via dell'adozione di Pisone, promosse la ribellione dei pretoriani che uccisero Galba insieme al figlio adottivo il 15 gennaio del 69.
(3) SPQR/OB/CS. Il rovescio della moneta rappresenta la corona civica, con la menzione "il Senato e il Popolo di Roma per aver salvato i cittadini" (SPQR/OB/Cives Servatos), che gli fu concessa  al momento dell'ascesa e che richiama monete della stessa tipologia emesse sotto Augusto.
