Nero, Æ As, IMP NERO CAESAR AVG GERM, laureate
head right. / Victoria, personifying victory,
flying right, holding a shield inscribed S P Q
R, S C at sides. RCV(new) 1976 type, RIC 351,
Rome mint, (12.6 gm.), VF. Lucius Domitius
Ahenobarbus was adopted at age 13 by the
widowed Claudius, at the urging of his new
wife (Nero's pushy mother, Agrippina). Nero
succeeded to the throne when Claudius died
since he was older than Claudius' own son
Britannicus. At 17, he became Rome's youngest
ruler ever, at first guided by his mother and
advisors. Although he ruled wisely at first,
within a few years Nero had cast all that away
(and had his mother killed). He later became
unpopular with the Senate, and after revolts
erupted in the provinces, he was sentenced to
death. Nero chose to stab himself in the
throat with a dagger. Currently$62.00
Dec-19-00.

Description [Image] [Image] Nero, 54/68 AD.
Roman Imperial, AE As, Circa 66 AD Obverse:
IMP NERO CAESAR AVG GERM; Laureate bust of
Nero right. Reverse: Victory advancing left,
carrying a shield; SC in fields. Condition:
Good VF, Coin is much better than picture. The
coin has an attractive reddish brown patina
with some roughness. Remember this is a large
picture and it overestimates the roughness.
Not a lot of wear on the coin, but lowered the
grade from near EF to good VF because of the
roughness. Legends have weakness. Coin is
attractive for the issue with a nice portrait.
Centering is perfect, reverse shield is
somewhat softly struck as is usual for this
issue, but Victory is better struck than
normal. Nice portrait of Nero and decent
Victory. All in all, an very nice example of
this coin. Valuation: Why Valuation? Current
price information is found in Van Meter, Roman
Imperial Coins, where it is valued at value
bands VB2/3 or $101 to $1,000 in VF. Sear,
Roman Coins and Their Values, Millennium
Edition, estimates a VF at $200 and an EF at
$520. See CNG 55, lot 1157, where an nice VF
is estimated at $300. See also CNG 54, lot
1469, where an VF with surfaces a little rough
was estimated at $200 and sold for $250 + 10
%. See also CNG 45, lot 1920, where a good VF
was estimated at $300 and sold for $300 + 10
%; that same coin was also listed as CNG
XXXIV, lot 301, where it was estimated at $500
and sold for $400 + 10%. The coin at auction
has less wear than any of the examples, but it
has a weakly struck obverse legend, although
lot 1157 has a weak legend also. The coin at
auction has the best centering of all the
examples. Only lot 1920 has a better Victory
but lot 1920's reverse is way off center. The
coin at auction is a very attractive example
of a popular coin. Size: 10.42 grams; die axis
= 6; flan 2.9 mm thick; 28 mm in diameter.
Currently $127.50 Aug-23-00.

(2) IMPerator NERO CAESAR AVGustus
GERManicus. La moneta viene datata indirettamente
sulla base dell'utilizzo da parte di Nerone del
praenomen IMP a partire dal 66.
(3) Secondo BMC, il tema della Vittoria
è probabilmente legato alla campagna contro i
Parti. |
